A Dangerous Prayer

June 15, 2021

A few weeks ago, I heard New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff on Bob Goff’s Dream Big podcast. He talked about a prayer that evangelist Billy Graham used to pray every day. Here’s the prayer: “Lord, I will go wherever you want me to go and do whatever you want me to do.” When I heard that, my immediate thought was, “Whoa, that’s a dangerous prayer.”

I mean, what if God asks me to go someplace really disgusting or wants me to share Jesus with a scary person? Then what? Would I do it? I want to say yes, but it might not be easy.

After I thought about that dangerous prayer, I thought, “Well, of course, I’d do what God asks of me, and I’d go wherever He sent me. Why would I think that particular prayer is dangerous? I either trust God with my life, or I don’t.

Every single time God has asked me to go somewhere or do something that I’m scared to do, He’s always been faithful. You see, God knows about my weird aversion to the smell of toothpaste, that I sunburn easily, and that I very often get sick in extreme heat. AND, God loves me and wants the very best for me. I can trust Him!

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

I didn’t understand God’s plans when He moved me to MN 44 years ago. I certainly wasn’t excited to move from Southern California to a state that has below zero temperatures. But, after all these years, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Trust me; I try to imagine it every January!

I didn’t understand God’s plan when He asked me to go to Africa on a mission trip in 2007. I tried desperately to say no, but in the end, I knew it was part of His path for me. And who knew Africa is so beautiful and the people are so kind?

I was pretty sure it was part of God’s plan for John and me to go on a mission trip to Switzerland, but when Moldova was added onto the trip, and we found out we’d be staying in a stranger’s home I was sure God had forgotten me. However, some of my funniest and sweetest memories came from that trip.

So, yes, God, I will go wherever you want me to go and do whatever you want me to do because You have always been trustworthy, and You will be again.
